Microsoft Teams is Getting New AI Agents

Microsoft Teams AI Agents

Microsoft is launching a couple of new AI agents in Microsoft Teams that can summarize threads, automate various tasks, and more. While Microsoft’s Copilot assistant is already integrated into Microsoft Teams, the company believes that its new purpose-built agents will usher in a new era of collaboration, with humans and AI chatbots working together.

“These new collaborative agents are designed to enhance work across Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Viva Engage, to help groups coordinate, communicate, and execute with greater clarity and efficiency,” explained  Nicole Herskowitz, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft 365 and Copilot. “By leveraging work intelligence from Microsoft Graph, these agents deliver context-aware support while upholding enterprise-grade security, identity, compliance, and admin controls—helping interactions remain productive and protected.”

Here are the new AI agents that are now available in public preview in Microsoft Teams for organizations paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses for their users:

Channel agent: Each Teams channel can have a dedicated channel agent that can summarize channel conversations, assign tasks to users in Planner, and participate in meetings.

Facilitator agent: This is an AI-powered meeting assistant that can automate agendas, notes, task assignments, and time tracking.

Projet Manager agent: This agent is integrated into Microsoft Planner, Microsoft’s Trello alternative, and it can automate plan and task generation and monitor progress.

Agents in Viva Engage communities: Viva Engage (formerly Yammer) communities, which are accessible through the Engage app in Teams, can now have an AI agent that facilitates knowledge sharing and generates responses in place of community managers.

Knowledge agent in SharePoint: This new agent can automate SharePoint site cleanup, streamline content management, and more.

In addition to these new AI agents in Teams, users with a Copilot license will also get access to a new Copilot experience on October 1. The new interface will make Copilot easier to use across chats, channels, and meetings.
