OpenAI is rolling out new parental controls in ChatGPT to give parents more control over how the chatbot responds to their teens. These new controls will also give parents the option to disable some ChatGPT features, such as memory, chat history, and more.
On the web, parents will be able to link their account with their teen’s account (minimum age of 13) through a simple email or text invitation. Teens can still unlink accounts anytime (parents will be notified when that happens), and parents won’t have access to their teen’s conversations. However, OpenAI will send safety notifications to parents when its system detects that their teen is in a moment of “acute distress.”
Introducing parental controls in ChatGPT.
Now parents and teens can link accounts to automatically get stronger safeguards for teens. Parents also gain tools to adjust features & set limits that work for their family.

When a teenager links their account to a parent, they will automatically receive additional content protections against graphic content and viral challenges. Parents will also be able to manage various features, including memory, image generation, voice mode, and model training. Parents will also be able to set blackout hours when ChatGPT can’t be used.
“We’ve worked closely with experts, advocacy groups, and policymakers to help inform our approach—we expect to refine and expand on these controls over time,” OpenAI said today. You can find more information about these new parental controls for ChatGPT on this page.
