Microsoft is planning to launch a new version of its Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription for the education market. The new offering will launch in December and be priced at $18 per user per month in the US, which will be cheaper than the $30 per user per month Microsoft charges for its regular Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription.
The new academic offering will target educators, staff, and students aged 13 and older. It will provide access to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, pre-built and custom AI agents, and advanced management and analytics.
According to a recent report citing an anonymous source, less than 2 percent of Microsoft 365 customers are also paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot. This would mean that Microsoft 365 Copilot only has 8 million paying subscribers, compared to the over 440 million number of Microsoft 365 commercial subscribers.
As many students are already using AI tools inside and outside of the classroom, Microsoft Copilot needs to gain mindshare in the education market. In December, Microsoft also plans to make Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat available in preview across various Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Schoology, Brightspace, Blackboard, and Moodle.
Lastly, the Redmond giant also continues to court college students around the world with discounts on Microsoft 365 subscriptions. For a limited time, eligible students can get 12 free months of Microsoft 365 Personal, then save over 50% on the regular price of Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99/month) going forward.
