Google and Anthropic Partner on Future AI Model Training at Scale

Anthropic and Google announced an expansion of their partnership that represents Anthropic’s largest TPU usage to date. Under the terms of the agreement, Anthropic will gain access to over a gigawatt of Google Cloud TPU capacity in 2026, which it will use to train its next generation of Claude AI models.

“Anthropic and Google have a longstanding partnership and this latest expansion will help us continue to grow the compute we need to define the frontier of AI,” Anthropic CEO Krishna Rao said. “Our customers—from Fortune 500 companies to AI-native startups—depend on Claude for their most important work, and this expanded capacity ensures we can meet our exponentially growing demand while keeping our models at the cutting edge of the industry.”

Anthropic has been partnering with Google since 2023 when it began using the Google Cloud AI infrastructure to train its models and make them available to Google’s business customers through the Vertex AI platform and the Google Cloud Marketplace.

But this is a major expansion of that partnership that will give Anthropic access to up to one million Google TPU chips and additional Google Cloud services. Anthropic says it chose the TPUs for their price-performance, efficiency, and familiarity.

“Anthropic’s choice to significantly expand its usage of TPUs reflects the strong price-performance and efficiency its teams have seen with TPUs for several years,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian added. “We are continuing to innovate and drive further efficiencies and increased capacity of our TPUs, building on our already mature AI accelerator portfolio, including our seventh generation TPU, Ironwood.”
