Google is bringing its Gemini AI to Google Maps to improve navigation and the app’s hands-free driving experience. The AI assistant will soon be able to help users find specific locations, let them ask about parking spots, report traffic incidents, and more.
Gemini in navigation will start rolling out in the coming weeks on Android and iOS, with Android Auto support coming later. In addition to helping drivers find places, Gemini will also allow them to share an ETA with friends and create calendar events on their behalf.
Later this month, Google Gemini will also enhance the Google Lens integration in Google Maps, which is accessible by tapping the camera button in the search bar. The combination of Google Lens and Gemini will allow users to ask details about restaurants, cafes, and other places in their surroundings. This will be available first for Google Maps users in the US.
Two new Maps features are also rolling out now on iOS and Android in the US: The first one is landmark-based navigation, which will make it easier to get to a specific destination by showing gas stations, restaurants, famous buildings, and other easily identifiable locations along the way.
Lastly, Google Maps is also rolling out proactive traffic alerts to Android users in the US. These alerts will notify users about unexpected traffic disruptions in their surroundings, even when they’re not actively driving.
