OpenAI launched yesterday ChatGPT for Teachers, a new offering for educators and school leaders interested in a chatbot experience tailored to their classroom needs. The AI startup is aware that many teachers around the world already use ChatGPT, but the new ChatGPT for Teachers also offers admin controls and education-grade compliance.
“Teachers get a secure workspace to adapt materials for their classrooms, get more out of prep time, collaborate with peers, and get comfortable using AI on their own terms. School and district leaders can bring their teachers and school staff into one account with the same education-grade privacy, security, and compliance programs that protect student data and support FERPA requirements,” OpenAI explained in the announcement.
ChatGPT for Teachers offers unlimited messages with GPT‑5.1 Auto, as well as dedicated workspaces with connectors for Canva, Google Drive, and Microsoft 365. Teachers can also configure the tone and length of ChatGPT’s responses, and they can also use custom GPTs to create templates with other teachers.
OpenAI said yesterday that ChatGPT for Teachers will be free for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027. “After that, we may introduce or adjust pricing, but our goal is to keep the offering affordable for educators,” the company said in a separate FAQ. Lastly, all information shared with ChatGPT for Teachers is not used by OpenAI to train its AI models.
