Google is launching today a new Personal Intelligence feature in beta for its Gemini chatbot in the US. The opt-in feature will allow the chatbot to deliver personalized responses based on users’ data in other Google apps such as Search, Gmail, Photos, and YouTube.
As you may know, Gemini can already connect to other Google apps and services via an extension system that was launched when the chatbot was still called Google Bard. With Google’s Gemini 3 model, however, the AI assistant can now provide tailored answers using data from text, photos, and videos spread across other Google apps.
To illustrate how Personal Intelligence works in Gemini, Google used an example of the chatbot helping someone select the right tires for a minivan by using information from photos of previous road trips. Gemini is also capable of identifying license plates in photos and the van’s specific trim by searching Gmail.
Personal Intelligence in Google Gemini will be rolling out to eligible Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US over the next week. After enabling it, subscribers will need to choose which Google apps to connect to Gemini, and these connections can be turned off at any time.
In practice, Google said that Gemini should try to explain where it found its information when using Personal Intelligence. Users will also be able to correct Gemini on the fly when it makes a mistake, and also ask for responses without personalization.
“Our goal is to improve your experience while keeping your data secure and under your control. Built with privacy in mind, Gemini doesn’t train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. We train on limited info, like specific prompts in Gemini and the model’s responses, to improve functionality over time,” Google said today.
Personal Intelligence in Google Gemini will eventually expand to free users and more countries, and Google said that it’s also coming to AI Mode in search soon. At launch, the feature will only be available for paying subscribers with personal Google accounts.
