Codex, the AI coding agent that OpenAI launched last year is now available as a native Mac app. For a limited time, the company is also making Codex free to use, and it’s doubling the rate limits for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users.
OpenAI is used to releasing desktop apps on Mac first: That was previously the case for the ChatGPT app and the Atlas browser, and the latter has yet to be released on Windows. The new Codex app for Mac will work as a “command center for agents” that can run multiple tasks in parallel, and it also includes a library of agent skills, an open format originally developed by Anthropic for giving agents new capabilities.
“Codex is evolving from an agent that writes code into one that uses code to get work done on your computer. With skills, you can easily extend Codex beyond code generation to tasks that require gathering and synthesizing information, problem-solving, writing, and more,” the company explained today.
OpenAI is already working on bringing its Codex app to Windows, and it’s also planning to release new Codex tools that support real-time collaboration and task delegation. “Developers will soon be able to provide guidance mid-task, collaborate on implementation strategies, and receive proactive progress updates,” OpenAI said today.
