ChatGPT Free and Go Tiers Now Show Ads to US Users

OpenAI ChatGPT ads

OpenAI has started to roll out ads in ChatGPT in the US, but only for users on the Free and Go tiers. Ads will only be shown to logged-in adults, and the company said that they won’t appear near “sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health, or politics.”

“ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people for learning, work, and everyday decisions. Keeping the Free and Go tiers fast and reliable requires significant infrastructure and ongoing investment. Ads help fund that work, supporting broader access to AI through higher quality free and low cost options, and enabling us to keep improving the intelligence and capabilities we offer over time,” OpenAI said yesterday.

The AI startup said that ads won’t influence ChatGPT’s answers, and they will be clearly distinct from the rest of the chatbot’s responses. ChatGPT Free and Go users can choose if they want to see more relevant ads based on their past and current chats, and they can also delete their ad data at any time. Ads can also be dismissed, and Free users can also hide all ads if they agree to have fewer free daily messages.

OpenAI also made it clear that advertisers never see your personal details or conversations with ChatGPT. “Advertisers only receive aggregate information about how their ads perform such as number of views or clicks,” the company said yesterday.

While the company says that this is a “test” to learn how to make ads “feel useful and fit naturally into the ChatGPT experience,” the company is already planning to introduce new ad formats for businesses. However, ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience.
