ChatGPT is now available via Apple’s CarPlay infotainment system for iPhone users who have already installed iOS 26.4. The new CarPlay integration is available on all ChatGPT plans, and the chatbot can be configured to open in voice mode directly.
While ChatGPT in CarPlay will show recent chats by default, the CarPlay experience is really designed to be voice-first, for safety reasons. “Set up the app before driving, rely on hands-free, voice-first features whenever possible, and avoid interacting with your device while the vehicle is in motion,” OpenAI emphasized in an FAQ.

The voice mode you know, now available on-the-go.

CarPlay users can easily resume an existing chat or start a new one, but there are some limitations to be aware of. First of all, ChatGPT in CarPlay can’t access maps, vehicle information, or live location, so it’s not possible to use it as a navigation assistant. The AI chatbot is also unable to control car features, as well as any iOS app like Waze or WhatsApp.
If you use ChatGPT without a paid plan, you should also keep in mind that voice conversations are limited to 2 hours each day. Voice usage is “nearly unlimited” for paid subscribers, though there’s a daily limit for the most advanced GPT-4o model that’s used by default. After using all GPT-4o minutes, ChatGPT will automatically switch to the same GPT-4o mini model available for Free users.
