Microsoft Announces Major Upgrade to OneDrive

At a OneDrive + Copilot event today, Microsoft announced a major upgrade to OneDrive that updates files and photos for the AI era.

“Today, we showed how we’re bringing experiences that make your files more useful, your everyday work simpler, and your personal memories easier to enjoy” Microsoft’s Arwa Tyebkhan writes. “We showed Copilot turning files into finished outcomes, a faster and simpler file system across web, desktop, and mobile, easier and more secure sharing and collaboration, and new ways to rediscover, create with, and share your favorite memories.”

Key announcements include:

Copilot in OneDrive. Copilot is now generally available in OneDrive and SharePoint and Microsoft showed off several new capabilities, including analyzing across multiple files, organizing projects, transforming existing files into HTML reports and other new content, creating personal skills from repeatable processes, and a OneDrive Prompt Gallery to help you see what’s possible when working with your files.

HTML and Markdown support. OneDrive can open, edit, and collaborate with HTML and Markdown files, helping them become a natural part of your everyday workflow, right alongside the rest of your content.

Core file system improvements. OneDrive for Windows and Mac can now sync up to one million items, handle long file paths smarter to reduce sync errors, and work with as little as 8 GB of RAM.

OneDrive CLI. This command line interface is available now in private preview and lets you sync, exclude folders from sync, and view accounts, configuration, policy, and status. Learn more.

Sharing improvements. New Hero Links let you update permissions on a shared item in OneDrive without changing its URL. And Hero Links will soon support expirations.

Photos improvements. Copilot in OneDrive photos helps you find what you’re looking for using natural language. A new Map view lets you browse photos by location. New Edit with AI tools helps you fix, refine, and reimagine your photos. And Create is a dedicated creation experience in OneDrive that provides new ways to use your photos to create collages, holiday cards, and other personalized, shareable content.

Future roadmap. Microsoft also discussed some upcoming updates, like Autopilot support so you can collaborate on files with an AI agent, a “with Copilot” view toggle so you can quickly identify files that AI helped create, Copilot-based file diagnosing and sharing permissions fixing capabilities, and new experiences for finding photos and videos.
