Now Apple Plans to Open Up Siri to Third-Party AI

Mark Gurman has added a new wrinkle to his recent reporting about conversational Siri in iOS 27: Now, Apple plans to open up Siri to third-party AI chatbots, too.

In this latest report, Gurman says that Apple will expand Siri’s current ability to integrate with—really, hand requests off to—OpenAI ChatGPT. Starting with iOS 27, Siri will connect with other AI chatbots and agents in a similar manner. Apple will also update its developer tools so that the makers of these chatbots can simply add this capability to Siri themselves via a new Extensions API. Which makes sense, since Apple could then charge the chatbot app makers garbage fees for any subscriptions they create on iOS and Apple’s other platforms.

To be clear, this change is in addition to the other work that Apple is doing to finally bring conversational Siri to life. That includes a standalone Siri app, similar to other chatbot apps but styled like Apple Messages, Siri integration with Spotlight Search, and Ask Siri capabilities throughout its platforms and apps. That work is all based on a Google Gemini backend.

Apple will announce Siri Extensions alongside the other new Siri capabilities at WWDC 2026 in June, Gurman says.
