GitHub Opens Up to Multiple Third Party Agents

On the opening day of GitHub Universe 2025, GitHub announced Agent HQ, its vision for the future of the platform.

“AI isn’t just a tool anymore; it’s an integral part of the development experience,” GitHub’s Kyle Daigle writes. “Our responsibility is to ensure this new era of collaboration is powerful, secure, and seamlessly integrated into the workflow you already trust.”

To that end, Agent HQ is how GitHub is making AI agents native to the platform rather than something bolted on. It’s an open ecosystem through which any AI agent can integrate. Coding agents from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Cognition, xAI, and other AI companies will become available soon, GitHub says, as part of a paid GitHub Copilot subscription. And Agent HQ will work with GitHub primitives like Git, pull requests, and issues.

As part of this shift to multiple AI agents and an open ecosystem, GitHub is adding a command center called mission control so users can assign, steer, and track the work of multiple agents at any time. Visual Studio Code will be extended to support multiple agents. And enterprises will be able to use a generation of agentic code review, plus tools like control plane for determining what AI and agents can access and do, and a metrics dashboard for seeing how AI impacts work.

Copilot Pro+ customers can get started with Agent HQ now by using the OpenAI Codex in Visual Studio Code Insiders. But mission control is available today in the stable version of Visual Studio Code as well.
