Google Updates Gemini with More Personalization, More Features

New features in Gemini

Google Gemini is getting personal, starting with your Google Search history, and it’s getting several new and upgrade features.

“With Gemini, we’re creating a personal AI assistant — one that doesn’t just answer general questions, but understands you,” Google senior director Dave Citron writes. “Today, we’re taking another step toward this goal with the launch of Gemini with personalization, a new experimental capability.”

Powered by Google’s experimental Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model, Gemini with personalization can connect with Google apps and services, beginning with Google Search. If you allow it to do so, Gemini will now tailor its responses to your queries based on your past Internet searches. And in the coming months, Google will expand this support to Google Photos, YouTube, and other Google products to provide even more personal insights.

Gemini with personalization is available now in over 45 languages worldwide to Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers on the web today, and it will roll out gradually on mobile. To enable this feature now, open the Gemini app, click the model drop-down menu in the top left, and select “Personalization (experimental).” Going forward, when you enter a prompt, Gemini will determine if your search history can be used to help make the response better.

Additionally, Google announced the following new and upgraded Gemini features:

Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model improvements. Google is rolling out a new version of this model that supports file uploading, improved efficiency and speed and a new a 1M token context window that can help it analyze larger amounts of information and solve more complex problems.

Deep Research improvements. Deep Research has been updated to use Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, allowing it to create higher-quality, multipage reports with more details and insights. As with other reasoning models, it now shows you its thoughts while it does its research. This feature can now be used by all Gemini users in over 45 languages worldwide” for free “a few times a month,” while Gemini Advanced subscribers get expanded access.

New apps. You can expand Gemini’s capabilities with apps (previously called extensions) like Gmail, Docs, Drive, YouTube, and YouTube Music, and now there are some new choices, starting in English, like Google Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Photos. And thanks to the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model, Gemini can now handle complex tasks that use multiple apps.

Gems improvements. Gemini Gems lets you customize the AI to work with specific topics, and now this feature is rolling out to everyone, including those who don’t pay for Gemini. Google offers pre-made Gems for things like software coding, career coaching, and more, and you can customize those or make your own. You can also upload files when creating a custom Gem, so it can reference even more helpful information, Google notes.
