Amazon Shuts Down its Halo Health Products

Amazon announced today that it is shutting down its line of Halo-branded health and fitness devices and services.

“While we are proud of what we built, we recently made the difficult decision to stop supporting Amazon Halo effective July 31, 2023,” an email to Amazon Halo customers reads. ” We understand this news may be disappointing for you. In the coming weeks, Amazon will fully refund purchase(s) made in the preceding 12 months of Amazon Halo View, Amazon Halo Band, Amazon Halo Rise, and Amazon Halo accessory bands. In addition, any unused prepaid Halo subscription fees will be refunded to your original payment method. If you have a paid subscription, as of today you will no longer be charged the monthly subscription fee. You do not need to take any additional steps.”

A note about the closure on the About Amazon website doesn’t provide many more details, and nothing at all about the reasons for this decision. But employees who worked on Amazon Halo will be given ” packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.” So it’s clearly related to cost savings.

Amazon introduced its first Halo fitness band in 2020 and followed that up with a Halo View band that included a display and a choice of bands in 2021 and a Halo Rise sleep monitor device in 2022. I reviewed the first Halo band, which didn’t have a display, and found it lacking.

But it looks like those customers who did rely on Amazon Halo will be taken care of. Amazon will let users download their data from the Halo service, save scan images to their camera roll, and will remove any remaining health data from the service on August 1, 2023. Amazon requests that customers recycle their devices through the Amazon Recycling Program at no cost.
