Apple has quietly launched a web version of its Apple Podcasts platform today (via 9to5Mac). The web app is now available on podcasts.apple.com, and it follows the recent beta release of Apple Maps on the web.
Apple Podcasts comes preinstalled on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, but until today, the only way to access Apple’s podcasting platform on Windows was through the legacy iTunes for Windows app. However, iTunes still lets Windows users download podcast episodes locally, which is something the new Apple Podcasts web app can’t do.
The new Apple Podcasts web app lets users browse the podcast library and listen to shows without being logged in with an Apple account. However, after signing in with their Apple ID, users can access their saved episodes on other devices and pick up where they left off.
Overall, the new web app uses the same user interface as the Mac app: the Home page offers a combination of podcast suggestions and recent episodes from shows you follow, and the left navigation bar provides quick access to the latest episodes as well as saved ones. Apple Podcasts also has a Charts section where users can see the most popular shows and podcast episodes.
Thanks to iTunes, Apple has been a central destination for podcasts for many years, but it’s now facing competition from other big platforms such as Spotify or YouTube. In recent years, Apple also made Apple Music and Apple TV+ available on the web, and the absence of an Apple Podcasts web app was quite strange as it was already possible to share episodes using web links.
