Apple has reportedly started testing new iPad and MacBook Air models with OLED screens as part of a broader shift to high-end displays across all of its products. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPad mini could be the next device to get an OLED display when it’s refreshed in early 2026.
The current iPad Mini, which starts at $499, was last updated in October 2024 with an A17 Pro chip enabling Apple Intelligence features. Besides a new OLED display, the upcoming refresh may bring a water-resistant design and a new speaker system using vibration-related technology.
Gurman said that these design changes may come with a $100 price increase, which would make the iPad mini cost as much as the 11-inch iPad Air. However, Gurman added that “the upgrade plans aren’t final and could change or get postponed, as is typical during the product development process.”
Apple also plans to refresh its iPad Air with faster chips in Spring 2024, but Gurman believes that the midrange tablet won’t transition to OLED screens yet. “The iPad Air will be the last tablet in the lineup to make the transition — for now, at least. Apple doesn’t have active plans to move its entry-level iPad to OLED,” Gurman wrote.
Lastly, Gurman previously reported that the MacBook Pro would be the first MacBook to get an OLED screen in 2025. That didn’t happen with the base M5 version released earlier this month, which kept the same design. However, upcoming MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are expected to adopt a new case, and a touch-enabled OLED display is also a possibility.
As for the MacBook Air, the new models coming in Spring 2026 will add faster M5 chips but no design changes. Gurman believes that OLED screens may not come to the MacBook Air line before 2028.
