Tech Nostalgia: You Can Simulate Windows 98 in a Web Browser

If you pine for the days of yesteryear, a new free Windows 98 simulator that runs in a web browser tab may be just the thing. It’s called Desktop98, and it accurately emulates the Windows 98 desktop experience we all remember, with one major difference.

“It’s 1998. Your PC awaits,” the Desktop98 website explains. “Hear the modem screech. Watch the buddy list light up. Then walk into a 1998 that never ended, where the chat rooms are full of people who have no idea the year is wrong, and the web really is the 1998 web.”

Desktop98 is a free, web-based Windows 98 simulator that doesn’t require an account, a download, or anything other than an Internet connection. It’s a faithful reproduction of personal computing in 1998, albeit with that one difference I mentioned: It runs incredibly smoothly and much faster than a real PC did in 1998. Of course, that does nothing to detract from this experience.

Desktop98 provides the classic Windows 98 desktop with its Taskbar, Start button and Start menu, and core apps like My Computer, Paint, and Internet Explorer. It also includes faithful reproductions of third-party apps like Netscape Navigator, AOL, and Winamp, and playable games like DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, and Quake, each of which runs in an in-browser DOS emulator. And the web browsers are preloaded with bookmarks to archived versions of Geocities, Yahoo!, AltaVista, and other classics of that era.

“Desktop98 is a passion project celebrating the late-90s internet and PC culture, the sound of a 56k modem dialling up, AOL’s ‘You’ve Got Mail’, the door-open chime when a buddy signs on, Winamp’s llama, animated GIFs on Geocities, and chat rooms full of strangers,” the site’s makers explain. “It’s built so anyone can experience that era again without finding an old PC.”

Good stuff.
