Google Maps Improves on CarPlay, Returns to Apple Watch

Google today announced a major update to Google Maps for Apple CarPlay and the return of its app for Apple Watch.

“Google Maps helps you find places to go, things to do[,] and how to get there—no matter what device you’re using,” a new post to the Google The Keyword blog notes. “With compatibility for Apple’s CarPlay Dashboard and a new app for the Apple Watch, people using iOS devices can safely and easily navigate with Google Maps right from their car or wrist.”

So, there are two pieces to this:

Google Maps for CarPlay. The Google Maps app on CarPlay has been updated to support the CarPlay Dashboard, which provides a split-screen view between an app like Maps and commonly-needed functions such as media access and your schedule.

Google Maps for Apple Watch. The new Google Maps app for Apple Watch helps you navigate by car, bike, public transit or on foot, all from your wrist. “Quickly get estimated arrival times and step-by-step directions to destinations you’ve saved, like Home or Work, and other shortcuts you’ve designated in the app,” Google explains. “For all other destinations, you can start navigating from your phone and pick up where you left off on your watch.”

The Google Maps update on CarPlay is now available all CarPlay supported vehicles globally, Google says. And Google Maps for Apple Watch will start rolling out to customers worldwide “in the coming weeks.”

Looking forward to Google Maps on Apple Watch! When I got my watch, I was hoping for Google's bike directions on the watch but no such luck. This is a welcome return!

In reply to mclark2112:

If only Waze had lane guidance for interchanges and intersections. I tried using Waze, but I couldn't do without the lane guidance that Google Maps has.
