Meta is Testing Adding Messenger Back to its Main Facebook App

Meta is currently testing bringing back Facebook Messenger features inside its main Facebook. The company announced the news yesterday in a post celebrating Facebook reaching 2 billion daily active users.

“We are testing the ability for people to access their Messenger inbox within the Facebook app and you’ll see us expand this testing soon,” said the Head of Facebook Tom Alison. It’s been almost ten years, but the main Facebook mobile app used to include all features from the standalone Messenger app.

Back in 2014, Facebook decided to remove all messaging features from its main Facebook app and force users to download the separate Facebook Messenger app. The move angered a lot of users, but it made Facebook Messenger a juggernaut in the messaging space with 1.3 billion monthly active users as of September 2017.

This year, Facebook is planning to “build more ways to integrate messaging features in Facebook,” and this effort already started with the introduction of community chats to some Facebook Groups last year. In addition to messaging, Facebook plans to focus on AI, creators, and monetization this year.

“Contrary to reports otherwise, Facebook is not dead nor dying, but in fact alive and thriving with 2 billion daily active users,” Alison wrote. “People are using Facebook for more than connecting with friends and family, but also to discover and engage around what is most important to them.”
