WhatsApp Now Supports Using the Same Account on Multiple Phones

WhatsApp is finally adding support for using the same account on multiple phones. Until now, WhatsApp users could use the app on up to four non-phone devices, but using the same WhatsApp account on different phones at the same time wasn’t possible.

Starting today, WhatsApp is rolling out the ability to link your WhatsApp account to up to four additional phones. This top-requested feature should be available for all WhatsApp users in the coming weeks, the company said today.

“Linking phones as companion devices makes messaging easier. Now you can switch between phones without signing out and pick up your chats where you left off. Or if you’re a small business owner, additional employees are now able to respond to customers directly from their phones under the same WhatsApp Business account,” the company explained.

Even though WhatsApp has over 2 billion users, the app has been slow to add seamless multi-device support, and for years companion devices required a smartphone connection. That’s now a thing of the past, and the ability to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple phones should definitely help to make the app easier to use.

WhatsApp also said today that it’s working on an alternative to scanning QR codes for linking your account to new companion devices. The new login method will require entering your phone number on WhatsApp Web to receive a one-time login code to use on the companion device of your choice. This new capability should also roll out to all users in the coming weeks.
