Microsoft Teams Crosses 300 Million Monthly Active Users

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced during its FY2023 Q3 earnings call yesterday that Microsoft Teams had crossed over 300 million monthly active users. This is a new milestone for Teams after the company announced that the app had over 280 million users back in January.

“Teams usage is at an all-time high and surpassed 300 million monthly active users this quarter,” said Satya Nadella. “And we once again took share across every category — from collaboration, to chat, to meetings, to calling — as we add value for existing customers and win new ones like ABN AMRO, Jaguar Land Rover, Mattress Firm, Unisys, and Vodafone.”

This new milestone comes right after the Financial Times reported that Microsoft was considering unbundling Teams from its Office productivity suite in Europe to avoid an antitrust probe in the continent. Slack, Microsoft Teams’ main competitor previously filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft, accusing the company of anticompetitive practices.

While Microsoft said that it was open to “pragmatic solutions” to address the concerns of EU authorities, the Teams train isn’t going to slow down this year: A new version of the Windows desktop client that offers up to two times faster performance is currently available in preview, and it will be generally available later this year.

Microsoft Teams will also soon receive new generative AI features with the Microsoft 365 Copilot, which Microsoft will integrate with the rest of its Office productivity suite. In the meantime, the Teams Premium add-on already provides AI-powered features such as intelligent recaps, and Nadella said that it already has “thousands of paid customers just two months in.”
