Build 2023: Microsoft Announces Bing Search Integration Into ChatGPT

Microsoft Bing ChatGPT integration

At its Build developer conference this morning, Microsoft announced an interesting development of its ongoing partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI. Bing Search will soon be integrated within ChatGPT, where it will become the default search experience in the generative AI app.

ChatGPT will now have a world-class search engine built-in to provide timelier and more up-to-date answers with access from the web. Now, ChatGPT answers can be grounded by search and web data and include citations so you can learn more—all directly from within chat,” said Yusuf Mehdi, CVP of Microsoft’s Modern Life and Devices Group.

The new Bing integration in ChatGPT is going live today for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. For everyone else, Bing will be available via a new ChatGPT plugin.

In addition to this new ChatGPT integration, Microsoft’s Bing chatbot will be accessible from Microsoft’s various Copilot experiences. This includes the Microsoft 365 Copilot and the just-announced Windows Copilot that’s coming in preview on Windows 11 in June.

Last but not least, Microsoft is also teaming up with OpenAI on a new AI plugin ecosystem. ChatGPT plugins will be compatible with Bing, the Microsoft 365 Copilot, and the Windows Copilot, and this new plugin interoperability will simplify the work of developers.

“With plugins built right into chat, across desktop and mobile, Bing makes relevant recommendations based on your conversation. For example, you can use the OpenTable plugin to ask about restaurants or related topics.

Plugin support will roll out to the Bing chatbot in the coming weeks. Plugins will also be supported in the Bing experience that’s integrated into the Microsoft Edge sidebar, as well as the Bing mobile apps.
