Google Workspace Accounts Add Passkey Support in Beta

Google account passkeys signup

Google is adding support for passkeys for Google Workspace account today. Passkeys is a passwordless solution that Google is building in partnership with Apple, Microsoft, and the FIDO alliance, and Google previously rolled out passkey support for personal Google accounts last month.

Passkeys offer several advantages compared to passwords: They’re built on a standard, they’re resistant to phishing and other types of online attacks, and they support various authentication methods including a fingerprint, a face scan, or a screen lock PIN.

Starting today, administrators can go to the Google Admin console to enable passkeys for their end-users, who will have to add a passkey on their own. Creating a passkey to skip passwords at sign-in won’t require users to enable 2-step verification first.

“Authentication requires biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition, or a PIN or pattern on a device. The screen lock only unlocks the passkey locally and does not share biometric information with Google or other third parties,” Google explained.

Google isn’t the only company to believe in a passwordless future, and passkeys can provide users with a more familiar way to unlock their devices. You can learn more details about how to enable passkeys for Google Workspace accounts on this support page.
