Meta is Planning New AI Features in Facebook Messenger and Instagram

During an all-hands meeting with employees yesterday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the company’s AI roadmap. Meta has been pretty much absent from the generative AI conversation so far, but Zuckerberg and other Meta executives detailed new AI-powered features coming to Facebook Messenger and Instagram (via Bloomberg).

First of all, Meta is working on new AI chatbots for WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. These chatbots will be able to adopt different personas to help and entertain users.

In Instagram, a new tool will help users edit photos they want to share in an ephemeral story. This new tool will rely on text-based prompts from users.

Meta is also working on internal tools including AI chatbots to suggest feedback on products, as well as a productivity assistant named Metamate. In July, the company will also hold an AI hackathon to encourage its employees to experiment with generative AI technology.

During this company-wide meeting, Mark Zuckerberg also commented on Apple’s Vision Pro augmented reality headset. While Apple shared an impressive demo of the headset on Monday, the $3,499 price point left many tech enthusiasts scratching their heads. And according to The Verge, Zuckerberg also wasn’t too impressed by the Vision Pro.

“I think that their announcement really showcases the difference in the values and the vision that our companies bring to this in a way that I think is really important,” Zuckerberg said. The exec also emphasized that Meta’s Quest VR headsets were more focused on “being active and doing things,” while Apple’s demos showed someone alone sitting on a couch. “I mean, that could be the vision of the future of computing, but like, it’s not the one that I want,” Zuckerberg said.
