xAI, Elon Musk’s new AI startup has just put the wraps off its first AI chatbot named Grok. The company described its chatbot as having “a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak,” and it’s also leveraging real-time data from Twitter/X to get more knowledge about recent events.

Elon Musk, who was one of the co-founders of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, officially announced the creation of xAI back in July 2023. The company’s website says that it’s working closely with Musk’s other companies, including X/Twitter, and Tesla to make progress towards “understanding the universe.

Grok is currently available in beta in the US, and you need to join a waitlist to get access to it. Elon Musk said that it will be available for X Premium Plus subscribers and built into the X app once it gets out of early beta. However, Grok will also be available as a standalone app, Musk said.

The xAI team argued that Grok will “answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.” In an example shared by Musk, Grok is capable of answering when was Elon Musk’s last interview with Joe Rogan and what the controversial podcaster was wearing, while ChatGPT can’t answer these very specific questions.

“Grok is still a very early beta product – the best we could do with 2 months of training – so expect it to improve rapidly with each passing week with your help,” the xAI team said.
