Microsoft Copilot with free commercial data protection

Microsoft Copilot—known previously as Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise—is now generally available, the software giant announced today.

“Since Microsoft Copilot launched in preview in February, people around the world have embraced it as their everyday AI companion,” a new post to the Microsoft Bing Blogs explains. “It’s been used to generate billions of prompts and responses, helping people be more creative and productive in their lives.”

While Microsoft hasn’t announced any new Copilot features, its transition out of preview and into general availability entitles individual and business customers to some additional protections. Individuals who sign into their Microsoft account or Microsoft work or school account to access Copilot receive commercial data protection at no cost, which means that Microsoft cannot see any of your work or use it to train the underlying large language model (LLM), and the service will not retain your prompts or responses.

Businesses with Microsoft 365 E3, E5, A3, A5 (faculty only), F3, Business Standard, and Business Premium also get commercial data protection at no additional cost. And Microsoft says that it will extend Copilot with commercial data protection to all Entra ID users (excluding sovereign government cloud and student users) at a future date.

Businesses that wish to get started with Copilot should check out the Copilot Adoption Kit, the Copilot documentation at Microsoft Learn, and this video describing the latest Copilot updates in Microsoft Edge for Business.
