After Google said that it was investigating a Drive data loss issue that impacted a “limited subset” of users, the company has a solution to help users recover missing Drive files. Affected users can try using a recovery tool that’s built into the Google Drive sync client on the desktop.
The company detailed the steps to follow on a support page (via The Verge) Basically, you need to click the Drive icon in the menu bar or system tray, press and hold the Shift key, then click Settings. Next, you’ll need to click on Recover from backups to launch the recovery process.
If the app can’t find any backups, you’ll get a “No backups found” notification. Otherwise, the recovery process will start, and once it’s completed, you’ll see a new Google Drive Recovery folder on your desktop with the unsynced files.
If you’re encountering issues during the recovery process, Google is inviting you to submit feedback through the Google Drive app using the hashtag “#DFD84”. You can also contact support directly if you need more assistance.
As you probably saw on the site recently, Paul gave Google Drive a dry after growing increasingly frustrated with Microsoft’s OneDrive, and… he has become a convert. If Google Drive also has its issues, it’s a solid cloud storage service, and you can read more about Paul’s experience with it here.
