Proton Releases Mail App on Windows and Mac

Proton Mail desktop app

10 years after it released Proton Mail on the web, Proton has released Windows and Mac versions of its privacy-focused email app. A beta version of the app is also available for Linux.

“These new additions complement our existing web and mobile applications, ensuring you can keep your emails private across all your devices without being confined to a web browser,” Proton’s David Dudok de Wit writes. “With the new Proton Mail desktop apps, you get a dedicated email experience, allowing you to enjoy all the productivity innovations of our web app, allowing you to go through your emails and events faster without the potential distractions that pop up anytime you open your browser. And, of course, your privacy remains protected at all times.”

The Proton desktop apps support platform features like light and dark mode and notifications, and they offer integrated access to your Proton-based calendar as well. They should look and feel familiar to anyone using the web and mobile versions of the service.

Speaking of which, anyone can try the desktop apps for free for 14 days, though you’ll need a paid Proton Mail plan to continue past that. Proton Mail Plus costs $3.99 per month or $47.88 per year and provides 15 GB of storage, 10 email addresses, unlimited messages, and support for a custom domain. There’s also a Proton Mail Unlimited plan for $9.99 per month or $119.88 per year that provides 500 GB of storage, 15 email addresses, unlimited folders, labels, filters, and aliases, and supports 3 custom domain names. (Each tier offers other perks related to Calendar, VPN, and more, too.)

You can learn more about Proton Mail on the Proton website.
