Google Drive Adds Dark Mode Support on the Web

Google Drive dark mode

Google Drive has finally added dark mode support on the web this week. Dark mode was already available on the Google Drive mobile app, and the Google Workspace team acknowledged that this has been a popular request from desktop users.

“Today, we’re introducing a highly requested feature: Dark mode in Drive on web. This new setting aims to provide you with a more comfortable, customizable viewing experience for Drive,” the announcement on the Google Workspace blog reads.

When opening Google Drive on the web, users should now see a pop-up window asking them if they want to enable the new dark mode. Otherwise, the feature can be found in Settings > Appearance > Dark.

Dark mode support is something many people may take for granted today, but it’s still more common on mobile apps due to the popularity of AMOLED screens on smartphones. On the desktop, however, dark mode is just as useful to reduce eye strain over time. But this may not be something most developers are aware of.

On the Microsoft side, as an example, the company recently launched a redesigned OneDrive web app. However, to my knowledge, it doesn’t have dark mode support yet. And it’s the same for most of the Office Online apps.
