Meta’s Threads app has crossed a new milestone with more than 150 million monthly active users. That’s up from the 130 million number the company announced back in February.

During Meta’s Q1 2024 earnings call yesterday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Threads was “growing well”, adding that it “continues to generally be on the trajectory I hoped to see.” Threads, which was designed as a Twitter killer by the Instagram team, crossed 100 million users in just five days when it launched in select markets back in July, beating the explosive growth of OpenAI.

While Threads was pretty barebones at launch, the app recently introduced trending topics in the US. This is a feature the app needs to compete with Twitter/X, which still remains the best place to catch up with viral news. By launching Fediverse sharing in beta, Threads users can also share their posts on other networks like Mastodon that use the decentralized ActivityPub protocol. A Threads public API should also be released in June.

Today, the head of Instagram Adam Mosserri also detailed a new Hidden Words feature that lets Threads users hide custom words and phrases on the platform, as well as unwanted replies. The team has also started testing new options allowing users to select who can quote them and mute notifications on their posts.
