Airbnb announced yesterday that it will start showing customers the total price of stays with fees in its search results. The company was already doing so in parts of Europe, Australia, Canada, and Korea, but the US and other markets only had an optional price display toggle.
“Since we added the toggle, almost 17 million guests have used the feature to book travel on Airbnb, which shows how much our users appreciated this option. Now, we’re making total price display the standard pricing format globally,” the company said yesterday.
To be clear, Airbnb always showed the total price of stays, including taxes prior to checkout. However, the company will now show that information right from its search results in all markets. “Guests everywhere will now see the total cost of their reservation, including all fees before taxes, when they browse listings in search results making it easier than ever for guests to compare options and book the stay that’s best for their budget,” the company said.
Airbnb is implementing this change to comply with a Biden-era “Regulation Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees.” This FTC rule, which will go into effect on May 12, will require businesses to “clearly and conspicuously” display the total price with fees before a consumer consents to pay for live-event tickets and short-term lodging.
