Instagram has started testing a new repost feature for posts and reels videos, the company confirmed to TechCrunch. The ability to repost public content from other users has been available for years on other social networks, including Meta’s own platforms like Facebook and Threads, so its absence on Instagram didn’t make a lot of sense.
As of today, Instagram users can only share posts from others as an ephemeral story, which may not be the best way to highlight something they really like. There are also various third-party apps allowing users to repost content from other accounts on their feeds, so it was probably time for Instagram to make this feature available natively.
An official support page already explains how this new repost feature works. “When you repost, your followers may see that you reposted in their feeds, and reposts will appear in a special tab on your profile,” the company explained. It will also be possible for Instagram users to choose whether or not they allow reposts of their content on the platform.
Last week, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri also announced that it will soon be possible to re-order the posts on your grid so they don’t appear in chronological order. The company will also be testing the ability to quietly add a post to your profile without immediately showing it to your followers’ feed.
