Google Fi is rolling out a big update on the iPhone that allows customers to manage voicemail directly in the device’s Phone app instead of relying on the Google Fi app.
“We’re happy to announce that the long-awaited iOS voicemail upgrades are here,” the Google Fi Wireless team writes. “Rolling out between June 24 and July 2, voicemail management is simplified, allowing iOS users to manage voicemails directly through the iPhone’s Phone app rather than the Fi app.”
Google teased this change at the Fi 10th anniversary milestone, when it announced major changes to its various plans and new promotions for new and existing customers. And it’s been a long time coming: Google Fi support on the iPhone started off with several functional limitations, but it’s slowly gotten better over time, and more like what the typical Android user experiences.
With this change, Fi users will play and manage voicemail messages directly through the Phone app, while voicemail support in the Fi app is being phased out. This will finally eliminate duplicate voicemail notifications from both apps. But it also means that the voicemail stored in Fi will eventually be deleted. So you have until August 13 to download them using Google Takeout. Google has a support document that explains how in more detail.
This is fantastic news. With this and RCS support, the only major Google Fi feature now missing on the iPhone is network switching, and that doesn’t work on many Android phones either.
