Twitter/X rival Bluesky has finally introduced granular settings for notifications, a popular request from users of the decentralized social platform. The new settings allow Bluesky users to turn off notifications for likes and new followers, get notified about posts and replies from specific accounts, and more.
As of today, Bluesky probably offers the best replica of the old-school Twitter experience, but its notifications settings have been lacking. The same goes for Meta’s Threads app, which doesn’t let users receive notifications when specific accounts post new content. This is problematic for an app trying to compete with Twitter/X for real-time news.
? New ways to personalize your notifications are here!
– Activity Notifications: Get alerts from your fave accounts
– Repost Notifications: See when someone likes or reposts something you’ve reposted
– Enhanced Notification Settings: More ways to customize your notifications! pic.twitter.com/n22N5JJhWg— bluesky (@bluesky) July 7, 2025
Well, Bluesky can now notify users about a lot of things, including quotes, reposts, likes of their reposts, and reposts of their reposts. Each notification type offers options to get push notifications and/or in-app notifications from all users or just people in the users’ social graph.
Because Bluesky is a decentralized social network, there’s already a growing ecosystem of third-party apps that may already offer better notification support. There are also apps like Tapestry and Openvibe offering a unified timeline with posts from Bluesky, Mastodon, and other decentralized platforms. Still, it’s nice to see the official client finally help to reduce notification fatigue on mobile.
