Threads Crosses 400 Million Monthly Active Users

Threads, Meta’s alternative to Twitter/X has crossed over 400 million monthly active users a little more than two years after its launch. When it launched back in July 2023, Threads quickly became one of the fastest-growing apps of all time with 100 million users in just five days, and it previously crossed the 300 million milestone back in December.

“As of a few weeks ago we there are more than 400 million people active on Threads every month,” posted Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri. “It’s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives.”

It’s not exactly fair to treat Threads as an uninspired Twitter clone, even though the desktop web app bears a lot of resemblance to Twitter’s TweetDeck (now “X Pro”) dashboard. Threads was late to implement basic features such as Direct Messages, but it’s doing something interesting with the fediverse: Threads users can now follow people on Mastodon and other fediverse servers, and the app also recently introduced a dedicated Fediverse feed.

Threads benefited greatly from its integration with Instagram, which makes it easy to create a Threads profile from an Instagram account. However, the platform recently started testing Facebook account sign-ups, but this isn’t available in all markets yet. Both Instagram and Facebook currently have over 2 billion monthly active users, and Threads may eventually surpass the popularity of Twitter/X, which had 600 million monthly active users as of May 2024.
