Proton Announces Sheets, a Private and Secure Spreadsheet

Proton continues to chip away at our reliance on Big Tech for key productivity apps and services. Now it offers a spreadsheet called Sheets that works in Proton Drive alongside Proton Docs as an alternative to Google Drive, Sheets, and Docs, and Microsoft 365 OneDrive, Excel, and Word.

“Spreadsheets are the backbone of modern businesses, used to plan budgets, manage inventory, supervise members, and organize proprietary data,” Proton’s Anant Vijay writes. “This is why Excel and Google Sheets are everywhere, but organizations are increasingly concerned that these tools leave their internal data exposed to surveillance, tracking, and AI training.”

Proton Sheets is available to anyone with a Proton Drive account for free. It’s protected by end-to-end encryption to ensure that no one else, including Proton, can access the data it contains. And like all Proton services, Sheets is protected by Switzerland’s strict data privacy laws.

Proton says that Sheets is suitable for both individuals and businesses. Key features include:

  • Data visualization with charts and graphs
  • Built-in formulas
  • Real-time collaboration with others
  • Secure access from anywhere on any device
  • Access control to manage who can view or edit a spreadsheet
  • Import and export with CSV and XLS support

“Cyberattacks are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated each year,” Vijay adds. “Proton Sheets offers advanced protection for your data and helps you demonstrate to partners and clients that you take cybersecurity seriously. Small businesses can use Proton Sheets to protect sensitive data, like customers’ addresses and records. Consultants can use Sheets to securely collaborate with external partners. And journalists, NGOs, and entrepreneurs can use Sheets to manage their data, projects, and logistics without fear that Big Tech will scan their work or train AI assistants with it.”
