Gmail is Getting Gemini 3-Based AI Super Powers

Google today announced a set of big Gemini 3-based updates for Gmail that will bring AI into your inbox in a big way.

“Today, 3 billion users rely on Gmail to connect and get things done,” Google vice president of Gmail Blake Barnes writes. “AI has been a big part of that — from Smart Replies to AI-powered spam blocking. But email has changed considerably since Gmail launched in 2004. With email volume at an all-time high, managing your inbox and the flow of information has become as important as the emails themselves. To help, we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era and making it your personal, proactive inbox assistant.”

Here’s what’s new and coming soon.

AI Overviews. Similar to AI Overviews in Google Search, this new feature displays a summary of the key points of email conversations with multiple replies so you don’t have to dig through individual messages to find what you need. This feature is rolling out today at no cost. And if you have a paid Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, you can also ask your inbox questions with AI Overviews.

Help Me Write and Suggested Replies. Help Me Write helps you polish or create new email messages and replies. Suggested Replies replaces Smart Replies and uses the context of an email conversation to display relevant, one-click responses that match your writing style. And both are available now at no cost, though Help Me Write is getting an update next month that adds improved personalization through integration with other Google apps.

Proofread. If you have a paid Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, this feature provides advanced grammar, tone, and style checking so you can make sure your writing is as good as possible.

AI Inbox. This feature filters out clutter so you can focus on what’s important while maintaining security and privacy. “AI Inbox helps you prioritize, identifying your VIPs based on signals like people you email frequently, those in your contacts list, and relationships it can infer from message content,” Barnes explains. “This lets high-stakes items like a bill due tomorrow or a dentist reminder rise to the top.” AI Box is available now to “trusted testers” before being made more broadly available in the coming months, Google says.

These features are all based on Gemini 3 and are rolling out in the U.S and to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. They will expand to more languages and regions soon.
