Proton Drive Has Already Had a Great 2026

Proton today highlighted the many improvements it’s made to Proton Drive this year so far, but there’s more coming too.

“With the launch of Proton Sheets in late 2025 and, more recently, Proton Workspace, Proton Drive took an important step toward becoming a more complete privacy-first workspace for the files, photos, documents, and spreadsheets people use every day,” Proton’s Anant Vijay Singh writes. “So far in 2026, we’ve focused on making that experience faster, smoother, and more practical across file storage, sharing, and collaboration.”

Key improvements to Proton Drive this year include:

  • Performance and reliability improvements. Proton Drive is now up to 60 percent faster for file uploads on iPhone and iPad, and 30 percent faster for file uploads and 70 percent faster for file downloads on the web. And downloading shared files is now 70 percent faster, while uploading to a shared folder is 30 percent faster.
  • Photo gallery improvements. Proton has improved photo gallery and scrolling performance on Android, iPhone, and iPad.
  • File saving on Android, iPhone, and iPad. Users can now save files directly to Proton Drive on mobile.
  • Upload an entire folder on Android. Those on Android can now upload an entire folder from the device to Proton Drive. (This isn’t even supported by Google Drive, Proton notes.)
  • Document scanning on Android, iPhone, and iPad. Proton Drive now lets you scan passports and other important item directly on mobile.
  • Proton Sheets improvements. Proton’s spreadsheet app can now import, edit, and export to the open source OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format, in beta. Plus, it now supports hidden sheets, new Paste Special options (formula only and link only), custom formulas in conditional formatting and data validation, and the =SWITCH formula.

Looking ahead to the next few months, Proton plans to continue working to improve the performance and functionality of Drive across platforms. For example, the Windows, Android, and macOS clients will soon receive big upload and download performance improvements. And Proton is listening: If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can deliver that on its UserVoice site.
