Google is in the process of redesigning its app icons with a new gradient effect. The new design can already be seen across the main Google app, Google Gemini, Google Maps, Google Photos, and Google Home, and it’s coming soon to Google Workspace apps, as well as Google Voice.
9to5Google shared yesterday a first look at these redesigned icons, which look more rounded and colorful. “Last generation’s mandate of including all four company colors in icons is clearly gone. The page container has also been removed for most apps to allow for larger, more unique icons,” the publication noted.

Overall, these app icons look better than the current versions. If you look at the app icons for Google Meet, Google Chat, and Google Calendar right now, they’re so bland and similar that it’s probably easy to mix them up. The new gradient effect is also easier on the eyes than the current use of different shades of the four Google colors.
We don’t know yet when these redesigned Google Workspace app icons will start rolling out, but this will likely be a gradual process. Google may also wait for its I/O conference on May 19-20 to discuss this new design language. You may have also noticed that the logo for Google I/O this year also uses a nice gradient effect.
