Google Search Now Supports Preferred Sources in AI Mode and AI Overviews

Google Search Preferred sources AI Mode AI Overviews

The Preferred Sources feature that lets Google Search users pick up the news publishers they want to appear more often in the search engine’s Top Stories is now available in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google Search users just need to add their favourite sources in Search personalization settings to see more of their favourite websites across Google’s AI-powered search experiences.

“Just like in Top Stories, your Preferred Sources will be clearly labeled to stand out,” Google said today. “We’ve found that people are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source, and people have already selected more than 345,000 unique sources.”

Google said that “any website that publishes fresh content is eligible” to be picked up as a preferred source in Google Search, AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Preferred Sources recently became available in all languages, and you’re welcome to add thurrott.com to your list of preferred sources by going to this settings page 🙂

Moreover, Google’s AI responses may now show a short paragraph followed by a carousel with preferred sources to help users dive deeper into a specific topic. “For some searches where you might be looking for insights from others, you’ll soon see a similar carousel with helpful perspectives from online discussions, forums, and social media,” Google added.

Lastly, Google is also introducing a new “highly cited” label on its traditional search results page to highlight articles that many other publications have cited. This should give more visibility to websites publishing breaking news.
