Anytype is one of the more interesting top-tier Notion alternatives, a so-called “everything app”–or “second brain” or personal knowledge manager (PKM) app–with some unique advantages. For example, it’s open source, you control your own data, and the app can be used fully offline. But based on the town hall event I attended this past week, it looks like Anytype is also about to get a lot better.
“We have completely re-worked the foundations of the application to address long-standing issues and make the product more stable, fast, and future-proof,” Anytype’s Kaye writes in the announcement post. “It’s more reliable. It’s more performant. It’s more extensible. It’s more integrated with other apps. It’s better in almost every way. The result is an application that feels like it’s your very own custom software that’s connected to all parts of your life.”
The new Anytype platform is called Anytwo, which may or may not be just a codename since the organization will keep the existing Anytype platform available forever. Anytwo includes the Editor 2.0 experience with synced blocks, block links, word count, table text styling, table formulas, image captions, instant Markdown support, and other improvements, the Collections 2.0 organizer with richer back links, side-peek and groups on Grid layout, and other improvements, plus mini-apps, connector-based integration with any app, including email, calendars, meeting recorders, and whatever else, and optional agentic AI capabilities for those who want that.
The big thing to me is Editor 2.0, as I’m always looking at how solutions like this can export to the end points I use, like WordPress. It looks solid: Editor 2.0 is a complete rewrite that abandons the old block-based editor and is now based on the open source Lexical editor used by Instagram, WhatsApp, and many other online services. It uses real Markdown, not just Markdown syntax, and solves many problems with the previous editor while offering impressive performance gains.
Anytype will open up Anytwo for outside testing sometime next week, and you can sign up for the waitlist to be an early tester now. In the meantime, you can learn more about Anytype on the Anytype website. I’ve come close to adopting this solution several times, and I’m wondering now if Anytwo will put it over the top.
