Tolaria is a free and open source Notion alternative that’s based on Markdown and uses GitHub for file versioning. It’s a new app–the first versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux arrived this past April–but it has lacked a mobile client. Until now, that is: Tolaria is available now on iPhone and its maker says an Android version is coming soon.
“Tolaria now runs on iPad and iPhone,” Luca Rossi writes in the announcement post. “Mobile has always been, far and away, the number one requested feature on our product board. If you run an iOS device, now it’s here for you to try.”
Rossi says that the mobile apps are still in rough shape, with bugs, some ugly user interfaces, and some missing features. But the core Tolaria functionality is there, including the visual Markdown editor, with slash commands, properties, and source mode; Git push and pull with auto-commit, and two-way sync with an iCloud or Files folder; the command palette, now with iOS gestures and rotation; and its support for the same 19 languages the desktop app supports.
As with the desktop versions of the app, Tolaria for iPhone and iPad is written in React Native, and because it’s open source, you can download the source code from GitHub and check it out for yourself. As it turns out, the source code for the Android version is available there, too. But Rossi would rather test it further and work out any bugs before releasing that version of the app.
You can download Tolaria for iPhone and iPad through TestFlight, Apple’s service for developers to distribute pre-release versions of their apps.
