Microsoft Acknowledges Skype Bug Placing Messages Out Of Order

Skype for Windows Desktop Gets Improved Sharing

If you are running the latest version of Skype (7.17.0.105) that came out a few weeks ago, you may have noticed a nice little bug that places some messages out of order. At first, I thought it was simply an issue with my machine and the time zone (which Windows 10 kept changing to Pacific time even though I am in Eastern) but after taking a look at Skype’s support forum and chatting with co-workers, it looks like I am not alone.

The bug causes the messages you have received to be out of order and makes having a conversation using the tool quite difficult. This problem started showing up for me last week and with another co-worker earlier today. In the Skype support forums, Claudis, the community manager and admin of the forum says that this is a known issue and that the work-around is to download an older version of Skype.

Frankly, this is borderline unacceptable for the most basic feature of a chat application to not work correctly. Skype, which has had a number of issues during 2015 including multiple devices continuing to ring after a call was answered, has become a low-point for Microsoft and is falling out-of-favor with younger tech workers who prefer to use Slack. Yes, Slack will not replace all use-cases of Skype, but it can easily be used for inter-office communication which is a key user-group that Microsoft does not want to lose, especially in smaller organizations that could grow up into enterprise customers.

It does not look like Skype for Business is impacted by this bug, which is crucial as its enterprise customers typically use this tool, but for those impacted with the consumer client, it’s extremely frustrating.
