Facebook is back at it again with its clones. The company just launched a new standalone app, called Lasso, that is a literal copy of popular short-video social network TikTok. The company first started thinking of making such an app when apps like Musical.ly took off, but later ended up cancelling those plans.
Now that Musical.ly has been purchased by TikTok and has gotten a ton of traction in the recent weeks, mostly due to all the cringe content shared on the platform, Facebook has decided to clone the app. Lasso is basically a 1:1 copy of TikTok, with the user interface of the app looking exactly identical to that of TikTok.
The app gives you TikTok-inspired features like adding music to your videos, adding cool effects, etc. It includes hashtags and the ability to discover popular content by hashtags, as well as browsing top creators on the platform, etc. Right now, you can create an account with your Facebook or Instagram, and Lasso also lets you directly post your videos from the app to Facebook Stories, and support for Instagram Stories is expected to arrive later, reports The Verge.
Facebook’s TikTok clone likely won’t be a huge success. This isn’t the first time the company has tried to copy a viral app, so I am guessing Lasso is going to follow the same steps. Nothing to see here, really.
