Snapchat Takes a Page Out of TikTok’s Book

TikTok, the wildly popular successor to Musical.ly, has been one of the major highlights of the internet this year. TikTok is essentially a cringefest of an app where you will find kids, to grown men dancing to songs and doing weird, cringey things that are then trolled on platforms like Twitter and Reddit. It’s a crazy social sensation.

TikTok’s success has obviously led many big companies to copy the company’s techniques. Facebook already has a 1:1 TikTok clone as a standalone app. And now, Snapchat is taking a page out of TikTok’s book, reports The Verge.

One of the popular parts of TikTok is the community challenges where people dance to a certain song, like Drake’s In My Feelings challenge. Snapchat is now introducing the same feature on Snapchat called Lens Challenges. The feature is hidden under Snapchat’s community lenses and currently has three challenges: Jingle Bells, Baby Shark, and Disappear.

The first challenge, Jingle Bells, lets you sing along to Gwen Stefani’s Jingle Bells track, with the Baby Shark challenge letting you sing along to the Baby shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo song. And lastly, the Disappear challenge is a lens where you basically have to disappear out the frame, inspired by this popular meme from Vine. All of these are very much similar to some of the TikTok challenges, though they are quite hard to discover as they buried deep inside the community lens section of the Snapchat app.

I didn't even know TikTok existed until this post :). That said, I could see how this could be a lot of fun and so I'm not surprised it's popular. Games like Dance Central were also "cringe worthy" but they got even the most cynical to laugh and those who were anti videogame to get up and play. Something about dancing and sharing that experience with your friends (not necessarily the wider internet) has a wide appeal.

Something Snapchat won't be is a platform for discontent against PC (political-correctness) culture, which is what TikTok is becoming. It is the platform for Gen Z'ers to rail against the over-the-top millennial SJW attitudes.
