Google Announces New Developer Course: Android Basics with Compose

If you’re looking to get into Android software development but don’t have any experience, Google may just have the (free) online course for you.

“As the next evolution of our journey to make Android development accessible to all, we released the first two units of Android Basics with Compose,” Google’s Murat Yener writes. “This is the first free course that teaches Android development with Jetpack Compose to everyone. Compose simplifies and accelerates Android UI development, bringing your app to life faster with less code, powerful tools, and intuitive Kotlin APIs. If you are curious about learning Android development with Android’s latest offering for building native UI, this is a great place to start!”

Android Basics with Compose is similar to, but does not replace, Google’s existing Android Basics in Kotlin course. (Apparently, you build some of the same apps in each course, but use different UI toolkits.) But with this one, you don’t need any prior programming experience to get started. It will teach you the basics of programming as you learn the Kotlin programming language. Those with some experience are free to skip forward to the Jetpack Compose units.

And on that note, Google says more units coming soon. You can learn more at the Android Basics with Compose site.
