Android Studio Giraffe is Now Available

Android Studio Giraffe

Attention, Android developers: Google has released the latest version of its Android Studio integrated development environment, called Giraffe (2023.3.1).

“Today, we are thrilled to announce the stable release of Android Studio Giraffe, the official IDE for building Android apps,” Google’s Mayank Jain writes in the announcement post. “In this Android Studio release, we have upgraded the IntelliJ platform to 2022.3, including a brand-new visual look and feel in Android Studio, improvements to Live Edit, Compose animation previews, a new Device Explorer, a new SDK upgrade assistant, ability to use Kotlin DSL in your Gradle build scripts and much more.”

The “New UI” for Android Studio is actually still in preview, but the goal here is to create a modern, cleaner look and feel by reducing visual complexity, providing easier access to essential features, and disclosing complex functionality only as needed. This was long overdue, in my opinion, as I’ve always found this IntelliJ-based IDE to be obtuse and dense. This release features updates to the default main toolbar and tool windows configurations for Android, plus some new iconography. But the refresh will continue over the next two Android Studio releases as well.

You can download Android Studio Giraffe from the Android Developer website. Existing users can simply upgrade in place.
