Apple starts Keyboard Service Program for butterfly keyboards

Apple will now repair faulty butterfly keyboards free of charge…

“Apple has determined that a small percentage of the keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors:

  • Letters or characters repeat unexpectedly
  • Letters or characters do not appear
  • Key(s) feel “sticky” or do not respond in a consistent manner”

“Eligible models are listed below.

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

Also, if you had to pay for an out-of-warranty keyboard repair that was affected by this design, you can contact Apple for a refund.

So while Apple may have been late in acknowledging this faulty design, they will still retroactively cover any past repairs related to the butterfly design.

It will also cover your keyboard for four years from when you first bought it.
