Downvoting?

Do some people downvote relevant comments just because they can? It seems like you can’t even make a critical opinion or a realistic viewpoint without someone hitting downvoting said comment.

If you can't handle down votes, don't leave comments. Otherwise, learn not to interpret them as criticism, rather as disagreement.

In reply to Daishi:

Some initial comments aren't worthy of discussion. Made up example: Garlic is the best ice cream flavor, and anyone who disagrees is a moron. Not many like that here, but is there any value in posting reasoned and respectful disagreement in response?

Perhaps I'm just showing my own basis for downvoting: most disagreeable for me are comments posting subjective opinion as indisputable fact, especially those that imply or are explicit that any disagreement is proof of mental defect.

The weirdest ones are when someone states a fact without any opinion and receives downvotes. In the end, it's pointless to care. It's like "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" where the points don't matter.

I've said before and I'll say again: it would be useful to have a distinct "I disagree" and "this is spam/offensive/trolling" buttons. It remains unclear exactly what the downvote button is for, some folks use it to disagree, others because they think the comment is some form of violation.

I tend to read downvoted comments more thoroughly to either give them an upvote if the person was simply offering a different viewpoint or downvote them into oblivion if they were trolling. I've often upvoted a downvoted comment that I personally disagreed with, simply because the person offered supporting data or source(s) to back up their statement.

I think downvoting should be removed/disabled. Just upvoting will do.

In reply to hrlngrv:

Sure, agreement can be expressed through responding, but the results would be in most cases redundant. On the other hand, a real counterargument may provide new information to consider or differentiate thoughtful disagreement vs "I don't like this comment, even if it's true".

It's not just here. This place is usually pretty good. There are users who seem to exist just to troll people, and their stuff is usually heavily downvoted, but I don't recall seeing anything that wasn't kneejerk "everything sucks" negativity be downvoted hard.

Honestly, I can think of one member that I would just ban. They are nothing but a destroyer, who hates everything regardless of what it is and where it comes from. Bless Paul and the others for their patience with idiots.

I like the idea of up, down, spam. Simple. Being a realist I foresee that if such a system was ever instituted we would then have a slew of forum comments about how the spam button is being abused and people are just using it as a means to wipe out comments they don’t like, etc. Put another way, I think the up/down is fine.

I do what many here have noted. If I see a comment that is blatantly just someone being a jerk and not really contributing facts and is just fuming, I downvote it.

If I see a comment with downvotes that has valid points, good information and seems to simply be taking a position the herd doesn’ like, I upvote it.

If I see a comment that is great, I upvote it.

Most of the time I do nothing and move on.
